The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has affirmed that the government will not ban small-scale mining in the country. Instead, it will provide support to those miners who possess the necessary legal documentation to operate effectively and responsibly.
This announcement was made during a meeting with stakeholders in the mining sector in Bolgatanga on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, focusing on the Upper East and North East Regions.
Gyamfi emphasized that the government aims to empower small-scale miners with legal permits by offering concessions, comprehensive training, skill development, and logistical support for their operations.
He also mentioned that miners will be required to sell their gold to the government through the forthcoming Goldbod initiative.
“The rationale behind not banning small-scale mining is to support those who wish to engage in it legally and responsibly. We intend to simplify the licensing process by providing demarcated mining areas at the district level, enabling you to produce gold responsibly.
“Upon completion of your mining activities, it is crucial that you do not sell your gold to unlicensed individuals, whether they are Indian, Chinese, or even unlicensed Ghanaians. Instead, you should sell to a licensed Ghanaian authorized by the Ghana GoldBod, as they have been allocated funds to purchase all gold for the government, which will subsequently be sold to generate revenue for the country,” he stated.
