The Western Central Regional Police Command has initiated an investigation into an explosion that took place at a tailings site in Aboso, near Tarkwa, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
This incident resulted in the fatalities of three individuals, while three others suffered injuries and are presently receiving medical care.
According to the Police, initial investigations reveal that workers at the site encountered a python and alerted the facility’s owner, David Kofi Fletcher, who is now deceased.
The Police reported that Mr. Fletcher allegedly arrived at the site armed with a pump-action shotgun to eliminate the snake, and it is suspected that after discharging a shot, the pellets struck explosive materials believed to have been unlawfully stored on the premises, leading to the explosion.
The explosion also inflicted significant damage to surrounding properties, with numerous houses in the area experiencing shattered window panes.
Furthermore, six vehicles parked at a nearby washing bay sustained damage to their windscreens and windows due to the blast.
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 5, the Western Central Regional Police Command extended its heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and confirmed that the remains of the deceased have been taken to the morgue.
“The Minerals Commission has been informed and is working in conjunction with the Police as investigations proceed to ascertain the complete circumstances surrounding the incident. The Command also reminds the public that the illegal possession, storage, handling, or sale of explosives is a serious crime and poses considerable risks to public safety.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspected illegal storage or handling of explosives to the nearest Police Station,” the statement concluded.
