The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, denied reports that he had held discussions with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to mediate a resolution regarding the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
Speaker Bagbin declared the Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West parliamentary seats vacant on Thursday, October 17. The Supreme Court has since stayed this decision for further deliberations.
Parliament released a statement rebuffing rumors on October 22 that a video showing Speaker Bagbin meeting with President Akufo-Addo was circulating on social media. The statement clarified that the video is misleading.
The video was recorded during the presentation of the maiden Democracy Cup to the President and is unrelated to the current parliamentary issues, as stated in the explanation.
The Speaker’s office has emphasized that there have been no negotiations between the Speaker and the President regarding the parliamentary seats in question, and called for an end to the circulation of false information.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt., has come under scrutiny after a video surfaced on social media suggesting inappropriate behaviour. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been invited to a meeting with the President to discuss and reach a resolution regarding the statement made by the Rt. On Thursday, 17th October, 2024, the Hon. Speaker responded to a request by the Minority Leader to declare the seats of four (4) Members of Parliament as vacant.
“Parliament asserts with complete clarity that the insinuation in the circulated video is entirely untrue.” The video, captured on July 4, 2024, features the Rt. The Hon. Speaker and a delegation presented the first democracy cup to the President.
The effort to inaccurately categorize the video and distort facts in order to undermine the credibility of the Rt. Parliament and the Hon. Speaker’s actions are not only unfortunate but also insincere.
Parliament’s circular instructed the public to ignore the video and view it disdainfully.
The public is warned not to be deceived by false information and to treat the narrative with disdain.
