The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the University of Ghana to reclaim funds disbursed to senior staff members who took study leave but did not return to their positions for more than five years.
During an appearance before the Committee on Wednesday, November 5, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, affirmed that the University has initiated steps to recover the outstanding sums from the individuals involved.
Professor Amfo also revealed that an additional amount of GH₵555,283, categorized as unearned salaries, is currently being recovered, with some cases being pursued with the help of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
“We have achieved some recoveries in this matter; some individuals have fully repaid, others are on payment plans, and there are a few instances where we have not made progress in reaching the individuals, for which we have requested the assistance of EOCO,” she remarked.
The Committee urged the University to accelerate the recovery efforts and to implement more robust internal monitoring systems to avert a recurrence of such financial discrepancies.
