The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has reassured the public that there will be no military presence in the Ablekuma North Constituency during the parliamentary election re-run scheduled for today.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Dr. Omane Boamah highlighted that the Ghana Police Service will be entirely responsible for ensuring security throughout the electoral process.
He noted that this decision is intended to foster a peaceful, democratic, and citizen-friendly environment at the polling stations.
“To guarantee a peaceful and democratic process, the Ghana Police Service will take full charge of security for today’s elections in the Ablekuma North Constituency. There will be no military deployment,” the post stated.
Dr. Omane Boamah referred to previous instances of electoral violence—including the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the fatalities of eight civilians during the 2020 general elections—as justification for avoiding military involvement in civil electoral affairs.
“We must learn from these past experiences and prioritize the safety and security of citizens,” he remarked, reaffirming his trust in the police service’s ability to handle electoral security competently.
He also encouraged voters to engage peacefully and expressed his confidence in Ghana’s democratic process, while advocating for the use of body cameras to enhance transparency.
The re-run in 19 polling stations within the constituency is a result of disputes regarding the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election results, which left Ablekuma North without representation in the 9th Parliament.
