The National Labour Commission (NLC) has instructed the Ghana Air Traffic Safety Electronics Association (GhATSEA) to promptly cancel its planned strike action, deeming it illegal according to Ghana’s labour laws.
This confirmation was provided by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in a statement released on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
The GCAA indicated that this directive was communicated during a meeting that took place on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, which included representatives from the NLC, GCAA, and GhATSEA.
During the meeting, the NLC determined that GhATSEA does not possess the legal authority to declare or initiate a strike, asserting that GhATSEA is “an association and not a registered union authorised to negotiate or engage in industrial action.”
Previously, GhATSEA had declared its intention to commence an indefinite strike starting Thursday, January 15, 2026, citing issues related to salary discrepancies and demanding the dismissal of the Director of Human Resources at the GCAA.
In response to this announcement, the GCAA sought the intervention of the National Labour Commission.
At the aforementioned meeting, the NLC indicated that the proposed strike action violates regulation 20(e) and (h) of the Labour Regulations, L.I. 1833. The Commission further observed that the concerns raised by the Association fall within the parameters of a Collective Agreement, which the Commission asserts GhATSEA does not have the legal authority to negotiate or enforce.
The Commission stressed that such issues should have been addressed through the recognised union, which is a signatory to the Collective Agreement.
The Commission also stated that GhATSEA lacks the capacity to represent itself before the NLC and, as a result, has no legal right to declare a strike.
The NLC advised individual members who feel negatively impacted to submit their grievances through the procedures specified in the relevant Collective Agreement.
It further noted that once the issues are formally presented to the management of GCAA, the Authority should promptly resolve the grievances.
GCAA has stated its ongoing commitment to the development of human capacity and the enhancement of staff welfare.
