The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has put forth a set of proposals designed to honor the legacy of its founder, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, while also reinforcing the party’s historical identity.
Among the significant proposals, which have been approved by the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) and await the endorsement of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), are plans to rename the party’s national headquarters to “Jerry Rawlings House,” an amendment to the party’s constitution to officially acknowledge the birthday of the late founder, and the declaration of June as “NDC Month.”
These proposals were revealed by NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, during the commemoration of the 46th anniversary of the June 4 uprising at Agormanya Lasi Park in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, located in the Eastern Region.

“As a party, we will amend our constitution to recognize the birthday of our founding father as one of the important dates for the party, which is June 22. Furthermore, we are taking steps to rename the party headquarters as Jerry Rawlings’ house, as this is a common practice worldwide.
“Party headquarters are typically named after the founders of those parties, and Ghana should not be an exception. Therefore, we will initiate all necessary processes to obtain the required approvals within the party, ensuring that the national headquarters is designated as Rawlings House,” he stated.
He also voiced concerns regarding the decline of Revolutionary Square in front of the Jubilee House, instructing the planning committee to devise strategies to restore the Square.
“I urge the establishment of a committee, a planning committee, to provide guidance on how we can return the Revolutionary Square to its original condition. If you need to reach out to museums and the monument board, or whatever is necessary to facilitate the rehabilitation of the Revolutionary Square, it must be accomplished. It is not merely a monument; it serves as a lesson for our youth,” he emphasized.
The uprising of June 4, 1979, spearheaded by Jerry John Rawlings, is a pivotal event in the political history of Ghana and the development of the NDC. The party annually honors this occasion as a testament to its dedication to accountability and integrity.
