The Member of Parliament for Tempane, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has denounced the tragic shooting of two officers from the Ghana Immigration Service in Nagani, as well as a subsequent military operation in Basyonde, both located in the Upper East Region. She characterized these events as profoundly disturbing and intolerable.
In a statement released on Monday, November 3, 2025, the MP expressed her condolences for the loss of one officer and extended her sympathies to the grieving family, the injured officer, and the entire Ghana Immigration Service.
“It is with profound sorrow and serious concern that I address two unfortunate and deeply troubling incidents that have transpired in the Tempane Constituency within the last 24 hours,” she remarked.
“Violence of this nature is reprehensible, unacceptable, and a direct affront to the rule of law.”
Madam Akanvariba also criticized the actions of certain military personnel who allegedly stormed Basyonde following the Nagani shooting, reportedly assaulting residents and causing injuries to several individuals.
She noted that this situation has instilled fear and insecurity among her constituents.
“I unequivocally assert that such military actions against innocent civilians are unacceptable and unjustifiable. While the state has a responsibility to investigate criminal activities and uphold law and order, it must not penalize the innocent for the misdeeds of a few,” she stressed.
The Tempane MP urged the government, the Ghana Armed Forces, and other security agencies to:
- Conduct a transparent and prompt investigation into both the shooting at Nagani and the military operation in Basyonde.
- Ensure accountability for all unlawful acts of violence, regardless of whether they are perpetrated by civilians or security personnel.
- Restore trust, security, and peace in the affected communities through lawful means and dialogue.
Madam Akanvariba further reassured residents of her dedication to their safety and rights, encouraging calm as investigations proceed.
As your Member of Parliament, I want to assure you that your safety, dignity, and rights will consistently be my foremost concern. I encourage everyone to stay calm and adhere to the law as the authorities conduct a thorough investigation into these incidents,” she concluded.
