President John Dramani Mahama has extended his felicitations to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following his successful re-election, expressing confidence in strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Brazil and promoting initiatives that benefit nations in the Global South.
Through a Facebook post, President Mahama characterized Lula’s electoral success as thoroughly merited and indicated his intention to expand collaborative efforts between the two nations, which maintain longstanding historical connections.
“I extend my congratulations to President Luiz Lula da Silva on your well-deserved re-election as President of Brazil. Ghana and Brazil maintain a distinguished historical relationship, and I am committed to further advancing our bilateral partnership.
“In concert with the Accra Reset initiative, we shall persist in advocating for the Global South agenda to enhance the welfare of our respective populations.”
This congratulatory statement followed Brazil’s presidential runoff election on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in which Lula secured an additional term by defeating his opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party.
Electoral results released by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court indicated Lula’s victory with 51.79 per cent of valid votes, constituting 64,256,232 votes, whereas Bolsonaro garnered 48.21 per cent, corresponding to 59,826,041 votes.
Lula’s electoral triumph ensures an additional presidential term for the octogenarian statesman, who resumed office in 2023 following his prior tenure as Brazil’s president spanning from 2003 to 2010.
