The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has underscored President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to creating a strong monitoring system at all borders.
He urged officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to consistently prioritize the interests of the nation while endorsing President Mahama’s vision to reset, retool, and reform the GIS. He noted the Council’s alignment with governmental priorities, which include plans for the establishment of seven regional offices as part of the President’s retooling agenda for security services.
Emphasizing the vital role of immigration officers as the initial point of contact at borders, Hon. Muntaka highlighted Ghana’s 48 legitimate entry routes alongside over 200 illegitimate ones.
He made these remarks during a courtesy visit from the Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
The Chairman of the Council, Rev. Steve Wengam, referred to the Minister as one of the most effective Interior Ministers in Ghana’s history. He expressed profound gratitude to the Minister for his dedication to enhancing migration governance and praised his leadership in fostering resilience within the Service.
Rev. Wengam underscored the Minister’s responsibility in ensuring that the current recruitment process is conducted transparently and equitably, as well as the realization of essential resources such as the provision of 20 pickup vehicles, which reflects the Government’s commitment to the service.
Recalling the Minister’s appeal for innovative strategies to assist the council, the Council Chair revealed plans to initiate a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, named the Secure Our Borders (SECOBOD) initiative, aimed at supporting GIS and addressing various challenges.
The Council also detailed issues such as promotions, the necessity for assistance in combating indiscipline and corruption, infrastructure enhancements, vehicle shortages, modernization of border security, and the welfare of officers.
In his reply, Hon. Muntaka praised the Council for its efforts and assured them of his steadfast support.
The visit underscored ongoing initiatives to modernize the service, bolster border security, and tackle significant challenges confronting the GIS.
