President John Dramani Mahama has declared an increase in the financing of Ghana’s health sector, revealing that total health funding has surged to GH₵34.7 billion, in contrast to the GH₵23.3 billion recorded in 2023.
The President made this announcement during his 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, where he detailed his administration’s initiatives to enhance healthcare delivery and diminish dependence on external funding sources.
President Mahama underscored that this increase signifies a strategic policy shift towards increased domestic investment in healthcare.
He pointed out that the government’s direct contribution to health expenditures has significantly grown, indicating a stronger commitment to achieving sustainable and independent health financing.
“In 2026, direct government funding for health will represent approximately 72% of our total health expenditures. This is an increase from 56.8% in 2023. Core health allocations have escalated to GH₵23.3 billion, and when including National Health Insurance resources, total health financing now reaches GH₵34.7 billion.
“This demonstrates our unequivocal commitment to domestic financing and health sovereignty.”
