President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the critical necessity to enhance the security services of Ghana in light of recent assaults on citizens, including a pirate attack at Senya Breku, where 71 fishermen were robbed while returning from a fishing trip in the early hours of Thursday, February 27.
In his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered in Parliament on Friday, February 27, President Mahama connected this incident to wider national security issues, referencing both the murder of eight Ghanaians in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso and the Senya Breku pirate incident as stark reminders of the imperative to re-equip and properly furnish security agencies.
He praised the Ghana Armed Forces for their role in evacuating the victims from Burkina Faso, as well as the Ghana Navy, Ghana Air Force, the National Security Secretariat, the Awutu Senya West MP Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, the Chief Fisherman, and the community of Senya Breku for their united efforts in rescuing all 71 fishermen.
President Mahama stated that the government will provide assistance to the victims and replace the outboard motors and fishing equipment that were stolen.
“I have instructed the National Security Coordinator to support the affected fishermen and replace the stolen outboard motors and fishing gear,” he remarked.
