The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the government will allocate $1 million to assist over 1,500 smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana as part of the initiative to enhance vegetable production under the Feed Ghana Project.
In an interview on Monday, April 14, 2025, the Minister underscored the government’s commitment to empowering local farmers, many of whom are already involved in the cultivation of tomatoes and other vegetables.
He noted that a significant number of these farmers face financial constraints that hinder their ability to expand their operations, prompting the government to provide direct financial assistance.
The funding will be officially established on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, when the Minister is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Apex Bank to facilitate the distribution of funds.
“We are focusing on smallholder farmers who are actively engaged in farming and are registered. We are also working to integrate some of them into cooperatives. Many are already involved in tomato production, so our team will identify them and provide the necessary logistics to support their efforts.
“In some instances, these farmers lack the financial resources to carry out their work effectively. Therefore, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, I will address the media following the signing of an MoU with the Apex Bank to distribute $1 million to over 1,500 smallholder farmers in the Northern region for vegetable production. This is merely the beginning,” he stated.
Mr. Opoku further emphasized the government’s commitment to providing technical support to farmers, highlighting that improved seeds and agricultural inputs are being supplied to enhance productivity and enable year-round farming.
“Our technical team has developed high-quality resources, which we are supplying to our farmers. I have visited the fields and can confidently say that we possess the expertise to exceed the agricultural outputs of Burkina Faso.”
