The government has intervened to acquire 1,000 boxes of tomatoes and 2,000 bags of onions produced by farmers in the Asante Akim North District of the Ashanti Region.
This action is in response to concerns that, despite a successful harvest under the Feed Ghana Programme, the absence of buyers could severely diminish farmers’ incomes.
As stated by the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Frimpong Kwame Ohene Asante, smallholder farmers in the region had effectively increased their tomato and onion production through the initiative but encountered challenges in selling their perishable goods.
“In response to the MP’s request, His Excellency instructed that senior high schools in the Asante Akim North area purchase all the tomatoes and onions produced, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation for their crops while providing food for students,” explained Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, Director of Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness at the Office of the President.
Dr. Otokunor confirmed during a press briefing that the entire shipment of tomatoes had already been sold. The briefing also marked the launch of the public registration portal for farmers participating in the government’s Three Million Coconut Seedlings initiative.
He urged farmers interested in the coconut program to secure land prior to applying.
“The process is straightforward and digital. Using a mobile phone, tablet, or computer, farmers can complete the registration in just a few minutes by providing basic information such as name, contact details, farm location, and acreage,” Dr. Otokunor remarked. “Beneficiaries must have their land prepared before receiving seedlings to ensure timely planting and optimal success.”
The government’s dual initiative — tackling immediate market issues while encouraging long-term crop diversification — highlights its dedication to enhancing agribusiness and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
