The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has unveiled a policy initiative mandating that all state agencies source certain essential goods exclusively from local manufacturers.
Dr. Forson voiced his concerns regarding the ongoing importation of fundamental commodities, such as sugar and rice, despite the nation’s capability to produce these items domestically.
He made these remarks during a meeting with the leadership of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), aimed at bolstering the industrial sector, generating employment, and decreasing reliance on imports.
“To bolster our local industries, the government will soon release a list of products that all public sector entities must acquire locally. This approach will ensure that government procurement acts as a catalyst for the development of our industries,” he stated, noting, “In the future, any government procurement from outside Ghana will necessitate special authorization from the Office of the President.”
The Finance Minister also underscored the pressing need to address the issue of smuggling, which he indicated is undermining local enterprises.
He disclosed that the government has pinpointed significant smuggling routes and will soon implement stringent measures to curtail the influx of smuggled goods that unfairly compete with domestically produced items.
As part of a comprehensive industrial strategy, Dr. Forson called for a collaborative session with industry leaders to discuss how local businesses can engage in the government’s 24-hour economy initiative to enhance production and stimulate economic growth.
AGI President, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, expressed his support for the government’s dedication to fostering local industries. He commended the minister’s budgetary policies and conveyed optimism that ongoing collaboration between the government and industry would yield significant advancements in Ghana’s industrial landscape.
The forthcoming mandatory local procurement policy is anticipated to greatly benefit Ghanaian manufacturers, guaranteeing that government expenditures directly support the development of local enterprises and the enhancement of the national economy.
