The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey Georg, has revealed the government’s intention to elevate the Ghana Meteorological Agency to an Authority as part of comprehensive reforms designed to enhance the nation’s climate and weather monitoring systems.
The Minister stated that this proposed transformation aims to broaden the institution’s legal authority and operational capabilities, enabling it to more effectively meet the growing demands for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and disaster preparedness in Ghana.
He emphasized that the rise in extreme weather events, the risks of flooding, and the alterations in rainfall patterns have rendered precise forecasting and prompt public communication more crucial than ever.
Sam George made this announcement in Accra during the inauguration of the 2026 Meteorological Awareness Month and the unveiling of the 2026 Seasonal Forecast for Southern Ghana.
“While weather hazards cannot be avoided, their effects can be considerably mitigated through timely information, preparedness, and responsible actions. One of the primary objectives of this legislative review is to upgrade the Meteorological Agency’s status from an agency to an authority, thereby granting it greater policy influence.”
The event convened policymakers, climate specialists, emergency response organizations, aviation stakeholders, and representatives from the agriculture and maritime industries, all of whom depend significantly on weather data for their planning and safety needs.
The agency’s seasonal forecasts, early warning bulletins, and aviation weather services are regarded as vital resources for farmers, airlines, shipping companies, and urban planners.
