The Government of Ghana has revealed its intention to create an Independent Fiscal Council aimed at enhancing financial oversight and decision-making following the country’s departure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.
This announcement was made by the Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, during a courtesy visit from Emmanuelle Boulestreau, the Head of the Regional Economic Department of France for Nigeria and Ghana, along with Julien Frioux, the Head of the French Economic Department at the French Embassy in Ghana.
The discussions centered on reinforcing economic relations between France and Ghana, with a particular focus on regional development initiatives and opportunities for collaborative growth.
The Deputy Minister conveyed his optimism regarding Ghana’s economic recovery, crediting part of the progress to international partnerships, including assistance from France.
He pointed out that the targets set under the IMF programme are being met, inflation has decreased to 3.8%, and key macroeconomic indicators are reflecting positive developments.
He expressed his support for deeper collaboration between Ghana and France to maintain economic growth.
Additionally, he revealed plans to form an Independent Fiscal Council composed of members appointed locally.
He stated that this council will offer advisory assistance on financial controls and fiscal decision-making, thereby ensuring enhanced domestic oversight and accountability.
He mentioned that the council will be established after Ghana’s exit from the IMF programme, thereby reinforcing local ownership of the nation’s fiscal management and ensuring long-term economic stability.
Emmanuelle Boulestreau, the Head of the Regional Economic Department of France for Nigeria and Ghana, reaffirmed France’s dedication to aiding Ghana’s economic development, especially in the infrastructure and energy sectors.
She emphasized the significant potential for French enterprises to invest in Ghana’s growing economy and to make substantial contributions to the country’s development agenda.
