The former Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has announced that a delegation of 30 members from Columbus, Ohio, led by a former mayor of that city, is currently in Accra to enhance cultural and educational connections between the two cities.
Mr. Vanderpuije addressed journalists following a meeting with the delegation. He noted that the collaboration commenced in November 2015 when both cities entered into a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at fostering cooperation.
The delegation, which consists of artists, teachers, and educators, is visiting Accra to immerse themselves in Ghanaian culture and investigate possibilities for student and teacher exchange programs.
“On November 15, 2015, we were in Columbus, Ohio, to sign a memorandum of understanding that would unite the two cities. The essence of both cities lies within their inhabitants, the people of Accra and those of Columbus, Ohio.
“As of today [March 9, 2026], we are hosting 30 members from the city of Columbus, Ohio, who are visiting Accra. Their primary interest is in art and culture, and we are delighted to welcome them, led by the former mayor with whom we initiated this significant relationship.
“They are eager to experience the richness of our culture, and it is equally beneficial for us to appreciate the best of their culture. They have already begun to enjoy what they are witnessing.
“They are finding joy in their visit; they have educators and teachers among them who are also gaining insights from their experiences here. It is often said that Accra is exceptional because Columbus boasts a vibrant African-American community. Their cultural roots are deeply influenced by what they observe here in Ghana,” he stated.
