The government has established an ambitious objective to increase annual coconut export revenues from $11.4 million to $18.1 million—a nearly 60% rise.
Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, the Director of Presidential Initiatives on Agriculture and Agribusiness, stated that the strategy aims to bolster Ghana’s status as Africa’s foremost coconut exporter while improving its competitiveness in the global marketplace.
This announcement comes in the wake of the initiation of a nationwide farmer registration campaign as part of the government’s Three Million Coconut Seedlings Program.
Dr. Otokunor remarked, “The distribution of three million elite coconut seedlings, for which we are commencing registration today, is intended to significantly accelerate progress and expand cultivation by 20,000 hectares.”
He further noted, “The anticipated results are ambitious and transformative—expanding the cultivated area from 90,000 hectares to 110,000 hectares, and ultimately to 150,000 hectares in the medium term. Most crucially, this initiative will boost export revenue by 60%, increasing it from $11.4 million to over $18.1 million annually.”
To facilitate the process, farmers, cooperatives, and young agri-preneurs can now register for the seedlings through the official portal: www.piaa.gov.gh. The registration period will close on September 30, 2025.
In an effort to position Africa as a global center for the coconut industry, Dr. Otokunor disclosed that the Presidential Initiatives Directorate is assisting the Coconut Federation of Ghana in the establishment of the African Coconut Board (AFRICOBOD), which will be based in Ghana.
AFRICOBOD will bring together coconut-producing nations across the continent to promote growth and development within the sub-sector.
