The Ghana Education Service (GES) has declared that measures are being taken to address the issues raised by newly appointed teachers who demonstrated on Monday, June 23, regarding delays in salary disbursements and the issuance of staff identification cards.
As per a press release from the GES, the Ministry of Education has officially sought an extension of the lapsed financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance.
This extension will facilitate the processing of salary arrears that have accumulated over nearly ten months, as well as the issuance of staff identification numbers for the teachers impacted.
The teachers affected, who began their duties in September 2024, have not yet received their full salaries. Of the 12,807 graduates hired that year, 2,113 have not been compensated despite having received staff IDs. Additionally, 582 have not been issued staff IDs at all due to discrepancies in their Ghana Card information, SSNIT numbers, and cases of self-reposting.
GES has revealed that a technical committee, which includes representatives from the dissatisfied teachers, has been formed to enhance communication and coordination during the resolution process.
A nationwide staff validation exercise carried out in March 2025 identified irregularities in the recruitment process, leading to the current series of corrective measures.
GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, has urged the affected teachers to remain calm, assuring them of the Service’s dedication to resolving the issue.
“Significant progress has already been made,” the statement emphasized, noting that GES is tackling both immediate issues and implementing long-term reforms to avert future incidents.
The Service also mentioned difficulties in engaging stakeholders, highlighting changes in leadership among teacher organizations. GES is advocating for unified representation to enhance communication and more effectively address unresolved matters.
The statement also confirmed that a budget allocation has been included in the 2025 national budget to facilitate payments to the affected personnel.
