The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a strong condemnation of the violent and sexual abuse incidents reported during the Super Zonal Sports Competition that took place in the Eastern Region from February 4 to 6, 2026.
In a statement released on February 11 and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, GES acknowledged receiving reports of “serious misconduct involving students,” which included a stabbing incident and an alleged gang-rape.
“Management condemns these acts in the strongest terms and stresses that such behavior is unacceptable within the Ghana Education Service. Inter-school sports are a vital co-curricular activity designed to foster talent, promote discipline, teamwork, and unity among students.
“Consequently, it is intolerable for such events, or any activities related to them, to be linked with violence, sexual abuse, or any form of criminal behavior,” the statement stated.
As per the statement, initial reports suggest that a student from Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed approximately 200 meters away from the competition venue after stepping out to have lunch with a friend. GES reported that the victim was allegedly assaulted by students from New Juaben Senior High School.
Additionally, the Service indicated that a female student from Osino Senior High School was reportedly raped in a secluded area some distance from the competition grounds.
Regarding the alleged rape, GES revealed that two students have been apprehended and are presently in police custody, aiding the investigation. A third suspect, identified as the alleged ringleader and a former student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School, is currently evading capture.
“The victim has received medical care and has since been released from the hospital. She is being offered counseling and psychosocial support by the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls’ Education Unit, and representatives from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).”
Regarding the stabbing incident, the service reported that the injured student has received treatment and has been discharged. One individual has been apprehended and is currently aiding the police in their investigations.
The Ghana Education Service has confirmed that it is addressing the incidents with the “utmost seriousness,” emphasizing that all individuals deemed responsible will undergo due process in accordance with its Code of Conduct concerning student behavior.
Furthermore, GES has instructed the Regional Director of Education to impose suitable sanctions on the schools implicated, serving as a deterrent to others.
