Fire has swept through the Timber Market near Amamomo in Accra destroying a twelve-room storey building together with 10 shops .
According to residents in the area, the fire started at about 9 am and the Fire Service arrived on the scene about an hour later. It is not immediately known the cause of the fire, but traders were seen helplessly looking at the blaze as their structures were being destroyed.

Some affected residents have blamed the Electricity Company of Ghana for the fire outbreak. “Part of the structure is made of concrete blocks, but the part at the top is wooden. It took the Fire service two hours to get here. I called their contact lines many times but no one answered”, an eyewitness said. Other markets across the country have also experienced fires like areas like Mankessim, Kumasi, and Sunyani. In some instances, the Fire Service has attributed the fires to illegal electrical wiring.
The service has also warned traders against turning their business spaces into homes at night. They believe such actions possibly contribute to fire outbreaks in the country.
