President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the Vegetable Development Project as part of the Feed Ghana Initiative in Kukuom, located in the Ahafo Region. He characterized this initiative as a significant advancement in enhancing the nation’s food security and improving irrigation systems.
While addressing farmers, traditional leaders, and project collaborators at the event on Thursday, November 27, the President disclosed that the initiative encompasses the establishment of a state-of-the-art packhouse aimed at facilitating the grading, sorting, packaging, and cold chain management of all vegetables produced through the project.
Regarding the timeline, President Mahama indicated that the project is expected to be finalized within a year. He further mentioned that the government intends to replicate this model throughout the nation, particularly in the northern regions, where farmers frequently face challenges related to water scarcity during the dry season.
“The entire project has been meticulously planned to be completed within 12 months. This Vegetable Development Project will be duplicated in various other regions of the country, especially in the north, where water availability poses a significant challenge at numerous times throughout the year,” he stated.
Connecting the initiative to employment generation, President Mahama emphasized that a robust vegetable sector has the capacity to create more job opportunities. He underscored that the government is establishing the groundwork for a 24-hour agricultural economy that will assist in accommodating the expanding labor force and promote sustainable development.
