President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the necessity for enhanced nationwide public education regarding the use of Ghana’s national currency. He underscored that a contemporary currency system demands not only robust institutions but also a well-informed and responsible populace.
During his address at the Currency Anniversary Conference on Tuesday, November 18, President Mahama pinpointed three critical areas where public education must be bolstered to uphold the stability and integrity of the cedi.
He called upon the Bank of Ghana to promote the utilization of the cedi in all domestic transactions, asserting that widespread acceptance fortifies economic stability and mitigates unnecessary exposure to fluctuations in exchange rates.
President Mahama further stressed the significance of proper currency management. He noted that inadequate handling elevates printing expenses, diminishes the lifespan of circulating notes, and compromises the integrity of the currency.
“We must advocate for responsible usage of the cedi,” he asserted, encouraging citizens to embrace prudent practices in financial management.
Lastly, he highlighted the imperative to enhance financial literacy, contending that an informed public is more capable of preventing fraud and holding institutions accountable, thus fostering a more resilient and trustworthy monetary system.
