Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has urged the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to reaffirm their dedication to the core principles of the organization.
In his address during the official launch of ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary celebrations at the Accra International Conference Centre on April 22nd, Ablakwa emphasized the necessity of building upon previous achievements while addressing forthcoming challenges. He remarked, ‘It is essential to reaffirm our steadfast commitment to the principles upon which this Community was established.’
He further stated, ‘The forthcoming chapter of ECOWAS should leverage the foundations laid in the past while courageously welcoming the future. We must strengthen our progress in peace and security, enhance economic and political integration, and promote inclusive growth that benefits every citizen in this sub-region.’
The launch event, presided over by President John Dramani Mahama, marks the beginning of a year-long series of commemorative activities across member states.
These celebrations are intended to showcase ECOWAS’s successes in fostering regional integration, peace, and development over the last fifty years.
