The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has dismissed allegations that the Attorney-General is biased in the case concerning former National Signal Bureau Director, Kwabena Adu Boahene.
During an interview, Dr. Srem-Sai supported Dr. Dominic Ayine’s claim that the evidence against Mr. Adu Boahene is sufficiently robust to lead to a conviction.
He contended that this viewpoint is not uncommon, highlighting that the Attorney-General is not merely a neutral party but an active participant in legal matters.
“Attorney-Generals consistently hold a position on any case they present in court. They have their own stance. The Attorney-General is not an impartial judge who must remain unbiased and avoid prejudicing a case,” he clarified.
His remarks come in response to concerns regarding the Attorney-General’s assurance of a conviction prior to Mr. Adu Boahene being formally charged.
Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament have expressed that such statements could sway public opinion and affect judicial proceedings.
Nevertheless, Dr. Srem-Sai asserted that the role of the Attorney-General inherently requires taking a definitive stance on the cases they prosecute.
“Whenever he arrests an individual or brings someone before the court, that Attorney-General is always asserting that ‘I possess the evidence necessary to secure a conviction.’ Therefore, this is neither new nor out of the ordinary,” he remarked.
Adu Boahene and His Wife Remain Detained
Mr. Adu Boahene and his spouse, Angela Adjei Boateng, were recently apprehended in connection with an alleged financial misconduct case related to a $7 million cyber defense contract.
Although they have not yet been officially charged, they continue to be held in custody as they attempt to fulfill their bail requirements.
