Parliament has sanctioned the elimination of the COVID-19 levy. This levy, which was established during the Akufo-Addo administration to assist with expenses related to the pandemic, has now been abolished following the Finance Minister’s declaration of its repeal in the 2026 budget.
The government states that this decision is intended to enhance household incomes, support businesses, and expedite economic transformation.
During the debate on the motion, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, expressed his approval of the repeal but urged for more extensive tax relief measures.
He called on the government to “go further” by abolishing the One Ghana Cedi levy on petroleum products and the 18 percent electricity tariffs, asserting that such actions would reflect a true commitment to eradicating what he referred to as nuisance taxes.
