The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has advocated for a proactive strategy to enhance public confidence in the Cedi as the country adapts to swift transformations in the global monetary environment.
During his address at the Currency Anniversary Conference held in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, as part of the Cedi@60 celebration activities, Dr. Asiama remarked that each generation possesses its unique memories of the national currency, highlighting the necessity to contemplate how the younger Ghanaians will engage with the Cedi in the years ahead.
“Young Ghanaians are maturing in an era where value is transferred instantaneously, where digital interactions are instinctive, and where the demand for transparency and accountability is ever-increasing,” he observed.
He underscored that the trust that future generations will have in the Cedi hinges on the reliability of the institutions that oversee it.
“It is part of our duty as policymakers, technicians, and leaders to guarantee that the Cedi—regardless of how it is accessed—continues to fulfill these aspirations,” he stated.
Dr. Asiama elaborated that significant global changes are reshaping the concept of money.
He pointed to the swift growth of digital payments, worldwide advancements in electronic and tokenized currencies, and the rising impact of artificial intelligence on authentication, security, and financial systems.
“Simultaneously, global unpredictability, geopolitical shifts, and reliance on technology all introduce new vulnerabilities for economies like ours,” he remarked.
These changes, he indicated, are already affecting how Ghanaians earn, save, trade, and plan for their futures, emphasizing the necessity for consistent leadership, strategic prioritization, and enhanced institutional collaboration.
He highlighted that while digital finance continues to expand, cash remains vital for financial inclusion.
“Cash continues to be crucial for inclusion and is indispensable even as digital channels enhance convenience,” Dr. Asiama concluded.
