Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President, has pointed out that voter apathy in six regions significantly contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
He specifically mentioned the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Bono, and Central regions as areas of concern.
During the third day of the NPP’s ‘Thank You’ tour in the Ahafo Region on April 28, Bawumia emphasized the alarming number of voters who abstained in these regions, underscoring the necessity for the party to tackle the underlying issues that resulted in the low voter turnout.
He noted that the Greater Accra region had 571,000 abstentions, Ashanti 489,000, Eastern 258,000, Central 230,000, Western 164,000, and Bono 100,000.
‘These six regions posed a challenge for us, despite being our strongholds. The outcome could have been different had these individuals participated in the voting process,’ he remarked. Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia identified additional factors contributing to the party’s loss, such as the arrogance of power, rising living costs, the lack of government reshuffles, the implementation of the E-Levy, and the contentious haircut policy.
