The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), along with its 2028 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the party’s legal team, is convening an emergency meeting to assess the High Court ruling that convicted and sentenced the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi.
This meeting is a response to the High Court’s ruling, which sentenced Chairman Wontumi to 20 years in prison for each of the two counts he was convicted of in the Akonta Mining illegal mining case, with the sentences to be served concurrently. Additionally, the court imposed a fine of 10,000 penalty units for each count.
Akonta Mining Limited, which faced convictions on two counts, was fined 15,000 penalty units for each count.
Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay found Wontumi guilty on Counts One and Four, while Akonta Mining Limited was convicted on Counts Three and Six, determining that the prosecution had established all necessary elements of the offenses beyond a reasonable doubt.
In a Facebook announcement made on Monday, July 20, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong indicated that the party’s leadership, flagbearer, and legal team were reviewing the judgement related to the Samreboi mining case to decide on the appropriate next steps.
“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), along with our Flagbearer and the Party’s legal team, is currently engaged in a meeting to comprehensively review the judgement issued by the Court regarding our Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in connection with the Samreboi mining case, and to determine the suitable next course of action,” he stated.
Mr. Frimpong assured that the party would communicate its official stance and the outcomes of the discussions in due time.
In the interim, he urged party supporters to maintain calm and unity.
“I earnestly call upon all members of our esteemed Party to support the leadership during this difficult time. Let us stay composed, united, disciplined, and unwavering in our dedication to the principles and interests of the New Patriotic Party,” he stated.
