Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II called upon the parties involved in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to commit to lasting peace, emphasizing that they remain “one people” who must coexist, irrespective of the mediation’s outcome.
This appeal was made as the Asantehene convened representatives from the Mamprugu and Kusasi factions for an uncommon face-to-face discussion at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi, on Monday, December 1, 2025.
This meeting follows several months of individual discussions aimed at addressing the protracted conflict.
The gathering took place in a notably amicable environment, with both groups recognizing that they have no valid reason to be in conflict with one another.
The Asantehene commended their behavior, characterizing their politeness and maturity as a positive indication for the peace initiative.
He encouraged the leaders to start preparing their followers for a future without violence, emphasizing that peace in Bawku relies on a shared commitment to live in harmony.
“Regardless of the mediation’s outcome, you will still need to coexist as brothers and sisters,” he reminded them, advocating for an end to the cycles of chaos and distrust that have disrupted the region.
His Majesty is anticipated to present a report on the mediation, along with his suggestions, to President John Dramani Mahama in the near future, after which a wider consultative meeting of stakeholders is expected.
