The Commonwealth Observer Group to Bangladesh, under the leadership of its Chair, Former President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has engaged with the Inspector General of Bangladesh Police and the Chief of the Bangladesh Army staff to obtain security briefings.
The briefings concentrated on the security landscape as well as the preparedness and readiness of the security forces to facilitate a peaceful electoral and referendum process.
The elections are occurring today, Thursday, February 12.
“This will serve as a significant signal to the world, to South Asia, and South East Asia, that Bangladesh is committed to forging a democratic future, which is something that all of us who value democracy should aspire to,” stated Mr. Akufo-Addo.
He further remarked: “Democracy is one of the most vital pillars of the Commonwealth, enshrined in its Charter, representing a fundamental global value based on the principle that individuals possess the right to freely express their will and shape their own political, economic, social, and cultural systems.
“I urge all stakeholders to uphold these essential values for the benefit and prosperity of the people of Bangladesh.”
