Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of six young Ghanaian women at a military recruitment event at El-Wak Stadium in Accra on November 12, 2025.
The incident occurred when a stampede broke out among thousands of applicants seeking to join the Ghana Armed Forces, resulting in six fatalities and leaving numerous others in critical condition.
In a Facebook post dated Thursday, November 13, 2025, the former president remarked: “Upon my return from Angola, I was met with the heartbreaking news of the tragic deaths of six prospective recruits for the Ghana Armed Forces, with several others receiving medical care for various injuries sustained during the incident at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and wish a swift recovery to the injured recruits in the hospital, as well as to all those who experienced trauma at the El-Wak Stadium, including their parents or guardians and loved ones.
“It is my sincere hope that each day will provide you with renewed strength. May the Lord be with us all during this challenging time,” the statement concluded.
In related news, President John Dramani Mahama has mandated the suspension of military recruitment activities in Accra, while the Acting Defense Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has committed to a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
