Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is calling on both the Minority and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to uphold the recent Supreme Court decision on the four parliamentary seats that were previously deemed to be vacant by the Speaker.
On October 17, Speaker Bagbin declared the seats of four Members of Parliament vacant, including Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central). This decision led to a heated debate among members of the House.
Afenyo-Markin decided to petition the Supreme Court to reverse the Speaker’s ruling and reinstate the affected MPs. Amid heightened tensions in the legislature, his appeal emphasized the NPP’s dedication to resolving disputes through peaceful and lawful methods.
On Tuesday, November 12, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and a Supreme Court panel sided with Afenyo-Markin’s lawsuit, ultimately reversing the Speaker’s ruling.
After the ruling, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the significance of upholding democratic principles, mutual respect, and the rule of law in Ghana’s governance system.
