The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has voiced significant concern regarding the violence and turmoil that have arisen in the aftermath of the 2024 general elections.
In a strongly articulated statement, the Bishops denounced the incidents of violence, rioting, and looting that have disrupted peace across various regions of the country, resulting in loss of life, property destruction, and exacerbating divisions among the populace.
“These actions are intolerable and contradict the fundamental values of peace, unity, and respect for life that we, as a nation, cherish,” the Bishops remarked.
The Catholic Bishops Conference has called for an immediate halt to all violent activities and urged Ghanaians to maintain the peace that has characterized the nation’s democratic processes.
They underscored that resorting to violence and destruction to convey political dissent undermines democracy and adversely affects the most vulnerable members of society.
The Bishops specifically appealed to political party leaders to exhibit responsible leadership during this critical time. They urged leaders to condemn any unlawful actions by their supporters and to actively foster peace and adherence to the rule of law.
“Your responsibilities as leaders extend beyond the pursuit of power – they encompass guiding your followers with wisdom, promoting peace, and ensuring the welfare of every Ghanaian,” they added.
The Bishops also reached out to the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, urging them to remain vigilant and professional in managing the situation. They emphasized the necessity for security personnel to act decisively against those committing acts of violence, treating them as criminals irrespective of their political affiliations, while ensuring fairness and safeguarding citizens and property.
Justice must be upheld, the statement underscored.
The Bishops called upon religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the general populace to collaborate in the pursuit of peace and national unity. They stressed the significance of dialogue, mutual respect, and solidarity in bridging divides and progressing as a unified nation.
“May God grant Ghana peace, harmony, and healing following these challenging times,” the Bishops concluded, conveying their hope that through collective dedication, the country will emerge more resilient and united.
The message from the Catholic Bishops contributes to the increasing calls for calm and responsible conduct as Ghana addresses the aftermath of its closely contested elections.
