The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the government for its mismanagement of an $11.5 billion loan facility obtained over the past eight years.
Mahama asserted that if these funds had been effectively utilized, they could have been directed towards transformative initiatives that would advance Ghana’s development to levels comparable to cities such as Dubai.
While addressing the Muslim community during a special prayer service at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the Ashanti Region, Mahama drew a comparison between the current government’s performance and his own time in office.
He pointed out that during his administration, he secured a $3.5 billion loan, which was allocated to significant infrastructure projects, including the expansion of Tema Harbour, the construction of Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport, and various other initiatives designed to foster national growth.
“President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has borrowed $11.5 billion in just five years. In contrast, during my presidency, we only borrowed $3.5 billion for developmental projects that I spearheaded.
“Had I borrowed $11.5 billion during my time in office, Ghana would have achieved a level of development similar to that of Dubai.”
