The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, expressed disappointment in Speaker Alban Bagbin for rejecting a request for an emergency recall of the House.
The Majority Leader and his caucus suggested November 28 and 29 as potential dates for the recall in a letter dated November 22, 2024, to address urgent issues.
Speaker Bagbin stated that parliamentary activities would not resume until after the December 7 general elections.
Afenyo-Markin criticized the Speaker for acting as though Parliament belonged solely to him, and expressed his frustrations over the ongoing conflict.
This message is for my co-workers in the NDC. Check out the shutdown currently happening in Parliament. Today, the Speaker of Parliament has asserted control over Parliament as if it were his own personal possession. He opens Parliament at his discretion.
He consistently refuses to sit with us, even when there is an issue that he could discuss. Consider the most recent case. This impasse was brought about by them.
As law-abiding citizens, we NPP MPs took the matter to court and the court ruled in our favour. They contested the case but ultimately lost. I had hoped that Mr. Speaker would promptly open Parliament as a true Democrat and emphasize the importance of continuing government business.
