Akufo-Addo approves Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act 2024

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo signed the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024 into law, representing a significant achievement for the country’s shipping and logistics industry.

This Act, approved by parliament in July and signed into law by the president on October 18, 2024, expands the regulatory powers of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) to encompass sea, air, and land transportation. The goal is to foster a fair and competitive environment for commercial shipping in Ghana.

The Ghana Shippers Authority declared in a press release on October 31, 2024, that it has enhanced its ability to promote transparency in pricing, uphold service quality, and solidify Ghana’s reputation as a top choice for global commerce.

The GSA’s commitment to fostering fair trade practices is highlighted by this development, which aligns with the organization’s 50th anniversary.

Founded in 1974 as the Ghana Shippers’ Council, the organization changed its name to Ghana Shippers’ Authority in 1998 to better represent its broader focus on advocating for a strong trade environment.

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority is grateful to all stakeholders for their invaluable contributions toward this legislative milestone. The GSA emphasized the importance of collaboration in shaping the new Act.

In order to guarantee effective implementation, the GSA has initiated a countrywide awareness campaign to inform stakeholders about the rights and obligations outlined in the Act.

The Authority is also soliciting feedback for a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) that will assist in implementing and enforcing the law.

Stakeholders are strongly encouraged to engage actively in this initiative to contribute to the development of a sustainable and resilient shipping ecosystem.
