Public basic schools throughout the nation are anticipated to resume instructional operations today [Monday, October 12] following the cessation of a countrywide strike initiated by pre-tertiary educator unions regarding unresolved allowances and outstanding arrears.
The resumption is projected to reinstate classroom instruction and academic engagement following the interruption caused by the labor dispute, which disrupted public educational institutions and generated apprehension regarding the consequences for learners’ scholastic advancement.
The strike, initiated on September 25, 2026, by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, was terminated on Friday, October 9, after an accord with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The accord was established following deliberations concerning outstanding compensation owed to educators, with the unions requesting guarantees that these matters would be resolved to conclude the labor action.
The cessation is anticipated to enable educators to return to their instructional roles while pertinent governmental bodies proceed toward executing the undertakings established during the negotiation process.
As a component of the framework to settle the disagreement, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has committed to disbursing educators’ outstanding promotion allowances by October 16.
The pledge resulted from the involvement of the Council of State, which facilitated collaborative efforts to resolve the deadlock between the educator unions and the administration.
The disbursement of promotion allowances was among the unresolved matters fundamental to the disagreement, with educators pursuing the settlement of compensation due to them.
The labor action generated heightened awareness regarding matters pertaining to the punctual disbursement of financial compensation owed to educators and the imperative for governmental entities accountable for public sector compensation and remuneration administration to address such concerns.
