The Ministry of Education has convened an urgent meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) scheduled for Monday, October 12, in an effort to resolve the ongoing strike initiated by GAUA.
This meeting is designed to establish a forum for meaningful dialogue among all parties and facilitate an equitable resolution to the current deadlock, which has significantly impacted academic and administrative operations at the affected tertiary institutions.
According to a circular issued by Hashmin Mohammed, the Education Ministry’s Press Secretary, the Ministry characterized this engagement as an integral component of the government’s dedication to addressing the grievances of organized labour through recognized negotiation frameworks.
The Ministry expressed optimism that the forthcoming discussions would yield favorable results and enable a prompt resumption of standard academic and administrative functions across the impacted institutions.
“Government remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing the concerns of organized labour through established negotiation mechanisms and constructive engagement,” the circular stated.
The Ministry further appealed to all participants to participate in the meeting with sincerity and demonstrate considerable accountability, given the substantial consequences of the industrial action on students, university communities, and the national interest at large.
In preparation for the meeting, the government encouraged GAUA’s leadership to capitalize on this opportunity to engage substantively with the pertinent stakeholders and pursue a resolution to the dispute.
The government also called upon GAUA to work cooperatively with the other parties engaged in the negotiation process to expedite the resolution of the current impasse.
Numerous tertiary institutions, including the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Ghana, have deferred their reopening dates due to GAUA’s strike action.
