The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a one-month notice to traders and other occupants of land at Agbogbloshie, commonly referred to as the Nzema Market, requiring them to vacate the premises to facilitate the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Market.
This notice was officially delivered on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and is set to expire on August 28, after which the Assembly will begin removing structures on the affected land.
In a Facebook announcement on Monday, August 10, the AMA indicated that the impacted areas encompass the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, the Nzema Market, and sections of the Yam Market.
The AMA has stated that all traders and commercial operators affected by the redevelopment will be relocated to a designated parcel of land that the Assembly has prepared specifically for them.
This decision follows extensive consultations between the Assembly and key stakeholders, including traditional authorities, market leaders, traders, and other community representatives, regarding the proposed redevelopment and clearance initiative.
As part of the preparations for this initiative, the AMA marked the structures within the designated project areas on Tuesday.
Subsequently, the Assembly launched a public education and sensitization campaign on Wednesday, August 5, aimed at informing traders, community leaders, and residents about the redevelopment plans.
The campaign is also designed to provide details on the anticipated benefits of the project, the clearance process, and the arrangements for relocating affected traders and other occupants.
The AMA asserts that this redevelopment is part of broader efforts to support the implementation of the government’s 24-Hour Economy programme through the establishment of a dedicated market facility.
Affected individuals are therefore encouraged to be mindful of the August 28 deadline and to make the necessary arrangements for their relocation to the designated site.
