A 42-year-old man named Elyasu Kunateh has been sentenced to 10 years of hard labour imprisonment by the Wa High Court for the defilement of a 7-year-old boy in Wa, located in the Upper West Region.
As per a press statement released by the Upper West Regional Police Command on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, the conviction was achieved through the efforts of the Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU).
The Police reported that the convict was apprehended on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, following a complaint made by the mother of the victim.
The alleged incident took place on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Upon receiving the complaint, the Police initiated an investigation immediately and referred the victim to a medical facility for examination.
Additionally, the victim received psychosocial support. The accused was subsequently brought before the Wa High Court and placed in police custody.
In a judgment delivered on Thursday, July 23, 2026, His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi found Elyasu Kunateh guilty of the crime and sentenced him to 10 years in prison with hard labour.
In a statement signed by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, the Command reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
“The Command will persist in pursuing all reported instances of child abuse, as well as sexual and gender-based violence,” the release indicated.
The Police also encouraged parents, guardians, caregivers, and the general public to stay alert and to report any suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station for prompt action.
