Over 500,000 final-year Senior High School students throughout Ghana are prepared to commence this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), beginning with the Oral English paper.
The 2026 examination marks Ghana’s reintegration into the regional WASSCE framework alongside other West African nations, following several years of administering separate papers due to interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that all essential preparations have been finalized to guarantee the smooth administration of the examination across the country.
John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, stated in an interview on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, that measures have been implemented to protect the integrity of the exams, including postponements in the printing of question papers for security purposes.
“Regarding preparations, I believe we are very much on track. For security reasons, we postponed the printing of the exam papers because we do not want them to be released prematurely, which could facilitate the actions of those seeking to undermine the integrity of the exams,” he remarked.
Mr. Kapi reassured candidates, parents, and educational institutions that examination materials for all centers are prepared and will be delivered punctually.
“For each institution, everything required for the exams is ready. We are confident that we will adhere to the timeline, and we will operate according to the timetable we have established,” he further stated.
In recent years, WAEC has heightened its efforts to combat examination malpractice through stricter security protocols, improved monitoring, and collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
The examination is anticipated to take place at numerous centers nationwide, with candidates undertaking a variety of core and elective subjects over the upcoming weeks.
