The Government of Ghana has declared a temporary halt to the application process for Ghanaian citizenship for historical diasporans.
In a joint announcement made on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President (DAOOP) stated that this pause is part of efforts to refine and enhance the overall application procedure.
The statement indicated that the suspension aims to improve accessibility, efficiency, and the user experience for applicants from the global African diaspora. The two institutions stressed that this action does not signify a withdrawal of Ghana’s commitment to welcoming members of the global African family; rather, it is a strategic measure to implement improvements that will facilitate smoother and more seamless future applications.
“Both institutions remain fully dedicated to welcoming members of the global African family home and are collaborating to introduce enhancements that will ensure future applications are more streamlined and efficient,” the statement highlighted.
The government reassured prospective applicants that updated timelines and revised guidelines would be provided in due course through official communication channels. Applicants also expressed gratitude for their ongoing interest, enthusiasm, and cooperation during this pause.
Ghana’s citizenship pathway for Historical Diasporans has been a fundamental aspect of the country’s broader diaspora engagement strategy, especially since the introduction of initiatives like the Year of Return and Beyond the Return.
Officials have indicated that the process will recommence shortly after the current review and enhancements are finalized.
