The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Rev. Stephen Wengam, has reiterated the Service’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders, assuring the public of enhanced efforts to bolster national security.
Rev. Wengam disclosed that the Council is set to introduce an innovative initiative designed to garner support from both the public and private sectors to adequately equip the Service for effective execution of its mandate.
He pointed out, however, that government funding remains “significantly insufficient” to fulfill the operational requirements of the GIS.
These comments were made during a working visit by the Governing Council to the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.
In welcoming the Council, the Regional Commander, DCOI (Dr.) Noah Ahomka Yeboah emphasized the substantial contribution of the Immigration Service to national revenue generation.
He also addressed key challenges confronting the Service, including inadequate office space, a lack of staff accommodation, and a shortage of vehicles and essential working tools.
A staff durbar was subsequently conducted, providing officers with the chance to voice their concerns and engage directly with members of the Governing Council.
The Controller-General of Immigration, Mr. Basentale Amadu, condemned the recent murders of several officers and called for peace in conflict-affected communities, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced protection and support for personnel.
