Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has vehemently criticized the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy Document, labeling it a “cut-and-paste” collection that does not offer a new policy direction.
While debating the policy document in Parliament on Thursday, November 27, he accused the Ministry of Finance of neglecting its responsibility to deliver a meticulously prepared and precise budget.
Afenyo-Markin pointed out that the document is riddled with inaccuracies, including mentions of ministries that have either been abolished or renamed by the current administration.
“How can you assert, in paragraph 519, that there exists a Ministry of Railway Development? How can you state, in paragraph 528, that there is a Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, and in paragraph 523 refer to a Ministry of Works and Housing?” he inquired.
The Minority Leader, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Effutu, remarked that numerous policies presented in the 2026 budget were merely recycled from earlier budget statements, rather than showcasing innovative strategies or initiatives.
He insisted that the government must produce a well-prepared and factually correct budget for parliamentary approval.
“This document has been presented to Parliament in least. This document should be retracted, and a new budget should be submitted to Parliament,” he asserted.
