President John Dramani Mahama is set to officially swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice today, Monday, November 17, 2025, following the recent approval of his nomination by Parliament.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was nominated by President Mahama on September 23, 2025, who highlighted his “extensive experience and long tenure on the Bench,” which includes service in the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court.
Since April 22, 2025, he has been serving as Acting Chief Justice, a position he assumed after the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie committed to fostering open-door, bipartisan leadership and emphasized his dedication to enhancing judicial independence and improving access to justice.
Parliament confirmed his appointment on November 13, with a vote tally of 163 in favor and 69 against, thus facilitating today’s swearing-in ceremony.
