The Minority in Parliament has urged that the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, be summoned to the House to clarify what they characterize as excessively stringent bail conditions imposed on former government officials currently under investigation for alleged corruption.
The caucus asserts that numerous affected individuals have been detained for weeks due to their inability to fulfill the high bail requirements established by investigative authorities and approved by the courts.
During a session in Parliament on Friday, November 14, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin emphasized that their request is not intended to disrupt judicial processes but rather to promote fairness and accountability within the legal framework.
“Bail is primarily determined based on a charge sheet or the specifics of the case, often without the other party being adequately heard, which is quite concerning. We are apprehensive, and we believe that if the Attorney General comes here to inform us about the rationale behind the imposition of these bail terms, we will be able to scrutinize the issue,” he stated.
“It becomes particularly serious when a court grants bail, yet the accused individual remains in custody solely because the conditions are excessively difficult to satisfy.”
The Minority maintains that the Attorney General’s explanation is essential to avert what they term potential abuses of prosecutorial discretion and to protect the rights of those accused.
