Dr. Frederick Appoh, the Executive Director of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, has revealed intentions to reactivate the Kojokrom railway located in the Western Region.
The Kojokrom rail lines, which were inaugurated in 2016, consist of a five-kilometre track extending from Kojokrom to Sekondi and a 10-kilometre track from Kojokrom to Takoradi, featuring four stations at Sekondi Prisons, Ketan, Butuah, and Essaman.
This 15-kilometre suburban railway, which incurred a cost of $165 million to the state, was established to enhance the transportation of goods and passengers within the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.
In an interview conducted on Friday, November 14, 2025, Dr. Appoh stated that efforts are currently underway to revive the line, utilizing a model akin to the Tema–Mpakadan service.
“In the Western Region, we are collaborating with the Ghana Railway Company Limited on this initiative. An exercise is currently in progress. Once completed, we will assess how to recommence the Kojokrom service. We are committed to ensuring that the two DMUs are operational. We are exploring how we can implement a model similar to that of Tema to Mpakadan on this line,” he elaborated.
In the meantime, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, while presenting the 2026 Budget to Parliament, disclosed that the government has obtained funding to construct the 300-kilometre Eastern Railway Line from Accra to Kumasi, with construction set to commence in 2026.
This initiative is part of a larger governmental strategy aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s rail network, lowering transportation costs, supporting the mining sector, and improving connectivity between inland production areas and ports.
