The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has honored its founder and Ghana’s inaugural president of the Fourth Republic, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, on the fifth anniversary of his death.
In a statement released by the party’s Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah, the NDC characterized the late president as a monumental figure whose impact on Ghana’s political and social progress remains unforgettable.
“As the party, the nation, and his many admirers around the globe commemorate him for his exceptional contributions to the advancement and welfare of our people, we in the NDC are confident that nothing will diminish his legacy from the annals of Ghana’s history,” the statement articulated.
The party also expressed its grief over the recent passing of Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, the former First Lady, highlighting that she has yet to receive the full honors of a proper farewell in recognition of her service to the country.
The NDC underscored that while five years may appear brief in the context of history, they have been “five long years of mourning and sorrow” for the party.
“Comrade President, Chairman Rawlings, may you continue to rest peacefully in the embrace of the Lord,” the statement concluded.
Jerry John Rawlings, who held the positions of both military leader and subsequently a democratically elected president, is remembered for his crucial role in Ghana’s political evolution and for establishing the foundation of the Fourth Republic.
